]]>Editor’s Note (7/15/2020): The Capital Region has entered Phase 4 of reopening, and museums are permitted to reopen for visitors with social distancing regulations. Below, we’ve noted which museums have announced tentative reopening dates and more information.
Whether you’re a history buff, a fan of the arts, or someone who enjoys soaking up local culture, museums are treasure troves just waiting to be explored. The museums of Saratoga County are full of fascinating stories and unique artworks and objects that show what makes this region special. Ready to begin your tour? Plan a memorable museum crawl to some of these hotspots in Saratoga County.
One of the best places to begin this museum crawl is the Saratoga Springs History Museum at the Canfield Casino. This historic building is located within Saratoga’s Congress Park, and it’s well worth taking a walking tour of the park to see the statues, memorials, and mineral springs beforehand.
When you visit the museum, you’ll discover three floors of exhibits that tell the story of Saratoga Springs from its beginnings to today. Founded in 1883, the Saratoga Springs History Museum cares for 15,000 artifacts, and their changing exhibitions focus on the development of this famous city and the people who played a major role.
As of July 15, 2020, the museum has reopened with new COVID-19 safety protocols.

Admission to the museum is a winning ticket to artworks, sculptures, photographs, memorabilia, and family-friendly, hands-on activities showcasing the evolution of three centuries of thoroughbred racing. They offer both guided and self-guided tours of the building and its exhibits.
The National Museum of Racing is also planning to open a brand new Hall of Fame Education Experience later this summer, which will include a state-of-the-art cinematic experience inviting audiences to feel the spirit of this sport.

Located in the heart of downtown Ballston Spa, the National Bottle Museum shines a light on our nation’s first major industry - bottle and glass making. In fact, back in the early 1800s, millions of glass bottles were manufactured by hand each year to hold the mineral waters of Saratoga County. This allowed the local region to participate in world commerce and flourish.
The National Bottle Museum contains a permanent collection of over 3,000 bottles and containers, and many of them are displayed in an open storage wall. Visitors can receive guided tours of the exhibits and view videos about glass making techniques, hand tools, and ways to locate old bottles. Enjoy a close look at the historic bottles and objects and see what makes each one unique.
As of July 15, 2020, the museum has reopened with new safety measures in place.

Named after the Parks & Bentley families, the Parks-Bentley Place in South Glens Falls is a historic house featuring a combination of early Federal and High Georgian styles of architecture. The original part of the house was built in 1766 by the Parks family, and additions were made throughout the 19th century.
The Historical Society of Moreau and South Glens Falls acquired the home in 1986, restored it, and currently manages the Parks-Bentley Place as their headquarters. Tours are usually available seasonally from April - September, and the exhibits are designed to enhance visitors’ knowledge and understanding of the historical significance of this area.
As of July 15, 2020, the Parks-Bentley Place will not reopen for summer 2020 in order to keep visitors and volunteers safe. Any 2020 programming will be announced in the fall.

]]>The next time you’re craving a quiet afternoon with a serious sandwich or otherwise kicked-up-a-notch lunch grab a basket, a blanket, and head to one of these serene spots in Saratoga County. The following seven picnic places all happen to have the ideal eatery nearby to pick up lunch on the way!
Benches scattered throughout the 17-acre park, picnic tables by a historic carousel, a duck pond filled with friendly fowl - and that’s not to even mention the historic statues, touching monuments, and brilliant fountains. Congress Park is undoubtedly a top picnicking destination, and it’s home to three of the Spa City’s mineral springs.
If it’s a classic sandwich-centered picnicking experience you’re seeking look no further than Saratoga Broadway Deli, approximately a five-minute walk from Congress Park. Choose from a variety of cold sandwiches, hot sandwiches, or customize your own sandwich at this authentic Jewish deli. They’re open 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 3pm on Sunday.
High Rock Park is another enticing option for a picnic that’s situated in the middle of the Spa City. Check out the pavilions and gazebo on site, or enjoy your meal on one of the benches that overlook the stunning 9/11 statue. Like Congress Park, High Rock Park is home to three of Saratoga’s mineral springs, so make sure to get a taste and snap a photo after your filling lunch.
Eddie F’s Eatery is a five-minute drive or 15-minute walk from High Rock Park. This off-the-beaten path seafood shack turns out overflowing lobster rolls, and you choose between warm and buttered or cold with mayonnaise. Phone lines open at 11am for orders every day but Sunday, you designate a pickup time, and then grab your New England-style lunch and head to the park.
We’d be remiss not to mention the 2,379-acre Saratoga Spa State Park, which is chock-full of excellent picnicking spots whether you want to spread out a blanket on the ground or make use of one of the many on-site picnic tables. The park includes two pools, two golf courses, six mineral springs, 12 miles of hiking trails, and more.
Lunch barbecue-style? Yes please! PJ’s BAR-B-QSA has been recognized in local, regional, and national publications for their incredible and varied barbecue options and they’re just a one-minute drive from the South Broadway entrance to the park.
Get ready to sink your teeth into Kansas City Ribs, Texas Beef Brisket, or North Carolina Pulled Pork - they offer the best barbecue from various regions across the country. PJ’s BAR-B-QSA is open for takeout 11am to 8pm Tuesday to Thursday, 11am to 9pm Saturday, and 11am to 8pm Sunday.
Hudson Crossing Park in Schuylerville is a unique picnicking destination as it not only has picnic tables, hiking trails, and a playground like many other parks, but also the Champlain Canal Lock 5, canoe and kayak launch at the Hudson River, a Sensory Trail, a walking bridge, informative signage, and birding and fishing opportunities. You’ll definitely want to hang out to explore this 50-acre park after your lunch!
Yes, you can have a pizza picnic! Or, check out the eight types of salads, five kinds of burgers, 15 different subs, and everything else Schuylerville Pizza & Pasta has to offer. They’re open 11am to 7pm Sunday and Monday, 11am to 8pm Tuesday to Thursday, 11am to 9pm Friday, and 11am to 8pm Saturday. This pizza, pasta, and sandwich shop is a two-minute drive from Hudson Crossing Park.
Situated close to charming boutique shops and reputable restaurants is Wiswall Park in Ballston Spa, a quaint spot with benches, a small gazebo, and a “Free Library” box where you can take or donate books. It’s also where the farmers market takes place, Thursday 3pm to 6:30pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm, mid-June through late September. Relax on the bench with your favorite food and enjoy the small-town vibe as moms with strollers walk by on the sidewalk and locals pop in and out of stores and cafes.

The Coffee Planet has a gourmet coffee bar, bagels, soups, sandwiches, wraps, and desserts. While the cafe itself is an inviting place to hang out - think writers on their laptops and funky art on the walls - if you’re picnicking at Wiswall Park just two minutes away there is no better place to pick up your meal. Enjoy a tasty turkey, tuna, or your go-to sandwich meat on bread, bagel, or wrap.
Moreau Recreational Park in Moreau (may come up as Fort Edward or South Glens Falls on a GPS) is adjacent to the Harry J. Betar Jr. Recreational Park. The two parks share parking spaces and you can easily walk from one to the other and make use of picnic tables, playgrounds, a baseball field, and a hiking trail.
Sorrentino’s Delicatessen & Market in South Glens Falls is a butcher shop and a deli in one. Their subs and wraps are created with Boar’s Head meats or their in-store roasted turkey, roast beef, or ham. The DEC states that Saratoga Lake is stocked with approximately 8,600,000 walleyes by the DEC annually, and anglers can also find smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, brown bullhead, redbreast sunfish, rock bass, black crappie, bluegill, chain pickerel, and pumpkinseed.
For walleye and smallmouth bass the DEC recommends fishing near a rocky shore; for the northern pike anglers should fish at the edge of weed beds. Anglers seeking panfish should use small jigs and live bait. There is a boat launch off Route 9P that is free for the public to use, and there are also several marinas.
Saratoga Lake is approximately 4.5 miles long and is fed by the Kayaderosseras Creek. Fish Creek is the outlet at the northern end of the lake.

Looking for trout fishing? Head to Kayaderosseras Creek, which is stocked with brown trout by the DEC annually in addition to rainbow trout stocked by the Town of Milton and brook trout (in the northern part) by Saratoga County.
Although it has “creek” in the name this is actually the largest river that lies completely within Saratoga County. The DEC divides the river into four sections with regard to fishing - South Corinth, Porter Corners, Rock City Falls, and Milton Center-Ballston Spa.

Moreau Lake State Park in Gansevoort is a 4,531-acre state park known for its year-round hiking trails and many recreational opportunities, including boating and fishing. The lake offers easy access for small boats and the majority of lake’s shoreline is on the state parkland.
You’ll find largemouth bass and rainbow trout along with smallmouth bass, yellow perch, brown bullhead, chain pickerel, and pumpkinseed. The northern end of the lake where it’s more shallow and weedy allows for optimal conditions for largemouth bass and chain pickerel.

Great Sacandaga Lake is home to largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, brown bullhead, Northern pike, walleye, redbreast sunfish, rock bass, brown trout, rainbow trout, channel catfish, common carp, and black crappie. Fun fact: The largest recorded Northern pike in the US was caught in Great Sacandaga Lake in 1940. It weighed 46 pounds and two ounces and held the world record until a 55-pound Northern pike was caught in Germany in 1986.
There are four boat launches on Great Sacandaga Lake: the Northville Boat Launch site off Route 30 in Northville, the Town of Day Boat Launch site on North Shore Road, the Northampton Beach Campground and Day Use Area boat launch in Mayfield, and the Broadalbin Boat Launch site off County Route 110 in Broadalbin.

]]>Saratoga County is a treasure trove of houses, buildings, and businesses boasting tall towers, classic columns, and symmetrical details you don’t need to be an architect to appreciate. Check out our suggestions below for examples of exceptional architecture throughout the area and plan a self-guided tour. Take a relaxing drive through the county or a walk through one of the historic neighborhoods and see what you can find!
365 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
Perhaps one of the best examples of incredible architecture in Saratoga, the Adelphi Hotel stands as the last of the grand Victorian hotels from the 19th century. The hotel was originally constructed in 1877 and underwent a major renovation in 2016, reopening in 2017. While more structurally sound and modernized, the Adelphi still exudes the charm of an old-world era.
The exterior of the building looks much like the original, and inside guests are wowed by the restored grand staircase, 11-foot ceilings, 140-year-old mirrors, and all the dozens of little details that pay homage to the history of the hotel.

The Canfield Casino was built in 1870 by John Morrissey as a gaming house for men. Richard Canfield took the building over in 1894 and added a dining room with a vaulted ceiling and stained-glass windows, as well as a fish pond on the grounds.
The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to the Saratoga Springs History Museum. It’s considered an example of Renaissance Revival Architecture, known for square, symmetrical buildings and columns.

The Batcheller Mansion Inn is the first stop in the East Side Neighborhood, which includes Circular Street, Union Avenue, and other points east of downtown.

The Batcheller Mansion Inn stands as the epitome of the Victorian architecture and old-world beauty Saratoga Springs is known for. The high Victorian gothic mansion draws influences from the French Renaissance, Italian styles, and Egyptian styles.
The website describes the building in vivid detail: “The red and gray slate mansard roof is bifurcated by dormers, each accented by a huge clamshell arch. The ivory stucco facade is studded by a myriad of ornate bays and its conical tower, resembling a minaret, is right out of Arabian Nights.”

The East Side Neighborhood is filled with large houses and grand buildings exhibiting a variety of 19th and 20th-century architectural styles, although it was largely farmland up until the 1860s. In this area, you’ll see examples of the Greek Revival style and a range of Victorian styles, such as Gothic, Italianate, Second Empire, and Queen Anne.
The homes on Union Avenue, such as in the above picture, have gorgeous classical columns, wraparound porches, and the distinct towers that are indicative of Victorian architecture. As you walk or drive through the neighborhood keep an eye out for narrow alleyways that lead to carriage houses and barns that used to serve the larger homes.

Head south on Route 9 to Saratoga Spa State Park for more striking architecture. Here are just a couple of the buildings you’ll see:

The Lincoln Baths on the corner of Avenue of the Pines and Route 9 was considered one of the largest bathhouses in the world when it opened in 1930. The building is comprised of stone, steel, terracotta, and concrete, and has a commanding presence with its grand entrance marked with tall marble columns.
On Roohan Realty’s Architecture and History of Saratoga blog, they quote James Kettlewell, author of Saratoga Springs: An Architectural History: “The Lincoln Baths were the first building in Saratoga Spa State Park to be a variation on the Federal style for patriotic reasons, where it invokes a nostalgic feeling through architecture for when the American republic was being formed.”

Known to locals as “SPAC,” the Saratoga Performing Arts Center was a huge undertaking for architect Bob Rotner, who initially designed the unique open-air venue as a summer home for the New York City Ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra.
Critics of the building initially insisted it was too long, too open on the sides and back, and would have terrible acoustics. “Everybody ran away from it,” Rotner told The Saratogian in 2016. “All of the experienced people said it would be a big disaster.”
Fortunately, the critics were wrong, and SPAC was a huge success and still is today, as it’s considered one of the premier arts and entertainment venues in the country.
The Village of Ballston Spa is next on the self-guided tour!

The Union Mill Complex was home to George West’s paper mill during the late 19th century; West is credited with inventing the square bottom paper bag. He sold the business and the building to the Union Bag & Paper Company in 1899. Since then, the impressive structure has been home to Bischoff’s Chocolates, Tuffitle Plastics, and today it’s used as an office space, retail space, and a restaurant.
This complex consists of three brick buildings and embraces the Italianate, Second Empire style of architecture common during the late 1800s. This style served as an alternative to Gothic or Greek Revival architecture and was primarily characterized by the use of a mansard roof, where there’s a change in slope near the top.

The Brookside Museum was initially built as a hotel in 1792 and is considered to be one of the oldest structures in the Village of Ballston Spa. The building has tall windows, two chimneys on either end and tall white columns that are classic examples of Greek Revival architecture.
The museum has been used as a school, a boarding house, a private residence, and as apartments. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is appropriately home to the Saratoga County Historical Society.
The tour continues east on Route 29 as you make your way to Schuylerville.
4 Broad Street, Schuylerville, NY 12871
The Schuyler House embodies the Georgian style of architecture, which is characterized by solid symmetry and proportion with window and door placement. This house was not the original structure on the property, though, as General Philip Schuyler’s first country home was destroyed by the British forces following the Battles of Saratoga in 1777.
The house that stands today was built on top of the previous home’s foundation and was completed in just 29 days. This house is smaller than the original, although additions were later added on.
As you head up back north towards Saratoga Springs make sure to drive through the West Side Neighborhood.
The West Side Neighborhood of Saratoga Springs includes Washington Street, Franklin Square, Franklin Street, Grand Avenue, and more. Throughout the district, you’ll find buildings constructed in the mid to late 1800s, with nods to the French Renaissance, Greek Rival, Colonial Revival, and more.
Universal Preservation Hall, depicted in the above photo, was built in 1871 and is one of the earliest examples of High Victorian Gothic churches in the country, although today it serves as a performing arts venue. The bell tower was once the tallest structure in Saratoga Springs and contains a 3,000-pound bell.
